The art of having one's life, one's being and one's very existence outside of oneself. Almost Buddha Dharma's Anatta, but somewhat different. Unachievable through effort, found only as gift.

Ah, but just imagine what it must sound like when they have a blackout! John and I spent the week camping, quietly, between the campground's busy family weekends. I had almost wished we'd gotten there earlier to experience the contrast between the two. Hope you all are having a good time--looking forward to your return!

I stated simply, and firmly that the rules did not allow for people not affiliated with the preschool to be present on the playground until such a time as the preschool was closed, that it was private property in any case, and that if the terms were unacceptable, he could find another place to play. I was surprised that I managed to not yell and to stand firm at the same time. Pleased, even.

I'd like to see him try that at a public school where his taxes actually pay for the grounds and play equipment. Thank you for doing what's right and not succumbing to idiotic bullying. We should always turn the other cheek but defend what is important, especially from people who would misjudge our compassion as passivity.

You are right, we have an obligation to the parents and children who are enrolled in the school - and probably would have to answer to someone in the county school system if something went wrong - if you let him in while school is in session, you'd be obligated to let every family in the neighborhood in as well, and then there would be a total disruption and our little flock of children would be gone.
Just my take on it but the county has rules for pre-schools and we do have a limit as to how many chilldren can use our facilities.

Good questions. You didn't mention how many kids your neighbor has.

It's really difficult to know what's really going on with your neighbor without communication, only leaving you to make assumptions.
Besides being too busy, is there possibly something else going on in their lives? I once had a very close friend--we had our daughters 2 weeks apart. They were going to grow up and be "best friends." It started out that way. Hannah was invited to sleep over at her house, maybe twice, but her daughter was never allowed to sleep over at ours. I chalked it up to overprotectiveness, control, neuroses. But it was hard on Hannah. She often asked to go play at her friend's house or asked if she could come and I'd have to make excuses. The friendship got watered down to us meeting at Burger King once a month or so to nothing at all. How do you explain that to a little kid in terms they can understand? Heck, I didn't fully understand it.

The other situation is more interesting. It's as if by you taking their child for the day, it shifted a burden and, your right, forgetting that it's about the children and not about them. . . Thank you so much for pushing my heavy rock for the afternoon. Perhaps someday I can push yours. It's sad to think of parenting that way. That may be a symptom of the lack of the "Village" we've been striving for. It's hard to break out of that mindset that's been so engrained since the 70's of having to be all and do all--alone.

In any event, regardless of how it's all preceived (and it really is all about perception), and as you pointed out, the friend's parents got a need met, you got a few needs met and, most importantly, the kids got their needs met. win-win-win. I guess it doesn't alway have to be only about one thing or another.

P.S. you want to take my kids for the day? They come complete with boyfriends. How about 3 cats, a dog and maybe a husband too? :-)

Dear Tim,
I've just come across your blog here at WordPress. Thank you for the kind comments about "Generations of Faith." I'm gratified to find someone finding it a useful tool in congregational ministry.

I'm interested in your idea of having your church leadership/congregation read the book (Sales! Ka-ching!), but I'd also like to express my willingness to come out to your congregation/synod/clergy cluster/community to lead a presentation/seminar on the whole thing. I've been making keynotes and leading workshops on this topic since 1997 (which led me to eventually write the book) and have now moved into the PowerPoint age (actually Keynote, on the superior operating system!)

Depending on your interests, I have seminars on Leadership ("Jesus for Every Generation"), Stewardship ("Money Talks"-Using Generational Ideas for Stewardship), Youth Ministry ("Jesus for a NEW Generation"), and Communication ("Tell the Gospel Well")--especially good for educators, website admin., newsletter writers, etc. For travel expenses and a daily fee (depending on what you'd like, from $200 for a workshop, to $600/ day for all day events--retreats, etc.) I'd be delighted to come. Let me know if a retreat/ Congregational seminar day/ synodical event would work for you.

God's blessings on you in your work.

Shalom,

Carl
